Frequently Asked Questions
What degree does Cody Smith have?
Cody holds a Master's of Professional Counseling degree from Liberty University as well as a Bachelor's of Psychology from Palm Beach Atlantic University. The master's degree held by Cody meets all state requirements including 60 course hours of graduate level work, including an internship and practicum. Some of the specific course work included Marriage and Family Therapy, Individual Counseling, Grief/Loss, Substance Abuse, and general Mental Health Disorders.
Do I need counseling?
Maybe. Counseling is meant for those who are facing problems, feelings, or situations in their life that they are unsure of how to deal with them. These problems can include, but are not limited to: marital conflict, problems with children/family dynamics, sad feelings, anxiety, unexplained crying, extreme guilt, mood swings, and many others.
Is counseling a last result?
No. Counseling should be a tool to be used in your life to help you develop the skills that you need to be successful in all aspects of your life.
Is counseling an easy or difficult process?
Good question! Counseling is not meant to torture someone or make you feel bad about yourself. Counseling is meant to improve your situation. Many times this means that you may have to change the way that you look at something or the way that you react to something. These cognitive changes are not easy to do and will take a lot of work on your part. You will get out of counseling what you put into it. The work that needs to be done can not be done by a therapist. The therapist's role is to guide, challenge, and encourage you on the journey to changing your life.
How is my faith integrated into the counseling process?
Your faith and belief in God is part of who you are. This belief can be the most powerful positive aspect of your life and therefore it needs to be included in all aspects of the counseling process. Your faith and belief system will be used to the level that you are comfortable with and will never be used against you. God is the ultimate healer and with His power infused in your life, there is nothing that can not be overcome.
Do you take insurance?
At this time I am not part of any insurance plans. I have chose not to take insurance at this time as it takes the power of treatment out of your hands and limits what can be done during sessions. Insurance typically only allows for a certain number of sessions based on a diagnosis that you are given during the intake session. I prefer not to have to attach a diagnosis with most problems unless it is medically necessary so as to avoid labling you and having this diagnosis a part of your permanent medical record. You are free to attain a receipt for services and submit it to your insurance company to see if they will reimburse you based on your out-of-network benifits.
